The blue-eyed black lemur has distinctive pale irises in both males and females. Adult males have black fur, while females are reddish or orange-brown. Males are usually born reddish, and their fur darkens during the first weeks of life.
It lives in a small area of northwestern Madagascar, including the Sahamalaza region. It moves on all four limbs along branches and leaps between trees. Its long tail aids balance but is not prehensile. Fruit is its staple food, supplemented by leaves, flowers and other available resources.
Scent plays an important role in communication. Forest loss, fires and hunting pose particular threats to a species with such a restricted range.
