The black-throated monitor is an East African subspecies of the white-throated monitor. It has a broad head, powerful limbs and a dark underside to the throat. Pale flecks on the grey-brown skin can be subtler in adults.
It inhabits open country including savannas and grasslands, where it forages on the ground for invertebrates, small reptiles, birds and eggs. Older sources and the reptile trade use the name Varanus albigularis ionidesi, which ITIS treats as a synonym of V. a. microstictus.
