Black-shanked douc — size comparison — facts and sources

The black-shanked douc is one of three douc species. It has a greyish body, dark hindlimbs and a long, pale tail. Its face is grey-blue, framed by paler whiskers; golden areas around the eyes give it a striking appearance. Black shins distinguish it from the red-shanked douc.

It occurs in forests of eastern Cambodia and southern Vietnam. It spends most of its time in the canopy, eating young leaves, fruit and seeds. A multi-chambered stomach and microorganisms help it use plant food. It lives in groups and moves along branches by climbing and leaping.

Hunting and forest fragmentation pose serious threats to the survival of these colourful monkeys.
