The black lemur lives in northwestern Madagascar and on nearby Nosy Be and Nosy Komba. It moves along branches on all four limbs and leaps between trees. It also uses the ground. Activity occurs both by day and night according to conditions.

Fruit dominates its diet, supplemented by flowers, nectar, leaves and bark. Food plants change seasonally, and some populations also use cultivated fruit.

It forms groups containing multiple males and females. Females usually dominate and have resource priority. Neighbouring groups' ranges may overlap; encounters involve display leaps and tail movements. Males have black fur and differ markedly in appearance from females.
