The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The black jaguar is a melanistic form of the jaguar. An inherited trait produces very dark colouring, although rosettes remain visible in suitable light. These animals live in American forests, wetlands and scrub, often near rivers. The name black panther is used for both jaguars and leopards with this colouring.
Jaguars swim well and hunt mainly by ambush. They catch capybaras, peccaries, caimans and turtles, among other prey, depending on local availability. They usually live alone and recognise neighbours through scents and calls. The female rears young alone, and they gradually learn to hunt.
Deforestation, roads dividing habitats and conflict with livestock keepers restrict access to prey and safe routes. Forest connections between refuges allow animals from neighbouring populations to meet.
