The black-backed jackal occurs in two separated African areas, in the east and south of the continent. It uses dry scrub, savannas and other open landscapes. It can exploit environments differing considerably in vegetation cover.
It eats small mammals, birds, insects, fruit and carrion. It uses keen hearing and smell while searching for food. The contribution of particular foods depends on local resources.
It lives in pairs or families or may be seen alone. Some activity occurs at dusk and night, especially in places disturbed by people. It maintains relationships through vocalisations and scent.
