Black-and-white ruffed lemur — size comparison — facts and sources

The black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) is a large lemur of eastern Madagascar's wet forests. It has a long tail, fluffy fur and contrasting black-and-white patches whose distribution differs between individuals. Abundant hair at the head sides forms a distinctive ruff.

Its diet is strongly linked to fruit. It also uses flowers and other plant parts, travelling between tree crowns. Swallowed seeds may move far from the parent plant, so feeding contributes to forest regeneration. A strong grip allows it to reach food while hanging from branches.

Ruffed lemurs lead diurnal, social lives, and feeding-group composition may change. Loud calls help maintain contact in dense forest. Females prepare nests for young and leave them sheltered while feeding. Continuous canopies matter for movement and access to seasonally fruiting trees.
