Beluga whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The beluga is a small cetacean with a rounded head and no dorsal fin. Adults have white skin, while young are darker. It inhabits Arctic and subarctic bays, estuaries and waters along ice margins.

It eats fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Echolocation helps detect prey, while varied whistles and clicks also maintain contact with other belugas. It can change the shape of the melon, a fatty forehead structure involved in sound production and direction.

Belugas are social. Group size and location change seasonally with food and ice conditions. A female cares for a single calf, which nurses for a long time and accompanies her movements.
