Beech marten — size comparison — facts and sources

The beech marten uses very varied shelters, from rock crevices to attics and farm buildings. Landscapes combining buildings and scrub offer both retreats and feeding grounds.

It is most often active after dark, searching for small animals and fruit. Its diet changes with food availability. It climbs proficiently and squeezes through small openings. It scent-marks its territory, helping reduce direct encounters with neighbours.

The female rears young in a sheltered place, and the offspring gradually explore the retreat's surroundings. Reproduction includes delayed embryo implantation. Living near people may cause conflicts around buildings, but the species also uses natural habitats.
