The bearded seal lives on shallow Arctic sea shelves. Long, dense whiskers help investigate the seabed, while drifting ice provides resting sites. It is usually encountered alone.
It eats bivalves, benthic crustaceans, octopuses and fish. Sensitive whiskers locate prey in sediment. Males give long, distinctive underwater calls that may last several minutes and travel far beneath ice.
