The bearded pig (Sus barbatus) is a forest-dwelling pig of Southeast Asia, occurring on Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Long pale hair around the muzzle forms its characteristic beard; adult males also have small facial warts.
It inhabits rainforests, mangroves and riverside forests. An omnivore, it takes fruit, roots and other forest-floor foods. Irregular tree fruiting means resources vary both seasonally and between distant forest areas.
Animals may form groups and travel widely. On Borneo, herds have been observed following abundant fruiting, closely tying their lives to forest cycles. Continuous forest allows access to these changing food sources.
