Bat-eared fox — size comparison — facts and sources

The bat-eared fox lives in open African areas. It uses savannas and grassy feeding grounds where invertebrates are readily available. Huge ears help it listen for prey sounds, while safe burrows provide resting and rearing places.

Unlike many canids it hunts mainly insects. Termites may form a substantial part of its diet. It regularly gathers small prey while moving slowly across a feeding area. It changes activity with temperature and local conditions, also using cooler parts of the day and night.

It lives in pairs or family groups. The male plays a substantial role in guarding the young while the female obtains food. Calls, scent and body behaviour maintain contact.
