The cacomistle lives in Mexican and Central American forests. It has brownish-grey fur, pointed ears and a long, ringed tail. An agile climber, it usually feeds at night. It generally moves among branches and seldom needs to descend.
It supplements plant food, particularly fruit, with eggs, invertebrates and small vertebrates. Outside breeding it is chiefly solitary, although several may meet at a productive fruiting tree. Long claws and bare soles assist its grip on supports.
