Barred grass snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The barred grass snake was separated as a distinct species from the formerly broad concept of the common grass snake. Strong dark cross-markings on the body sides are characteristic. The pale collar behind the head varies in prominence with individual and age.

An able swimmer, it often stays near water bodies where it finds amphibians. Females may be considerably larger than males.

Besides watersides it uses meadows and woodland.
