The banteng (Bos javanicus) is a wild South-East Asian bovid inhabiting forests, bamboo thickets and open clearings. Adult males are dark brown or almost black, while females and young are usually reddish-brown. Pale lower legs and a rump patch contrast strongly with the body.
It eats grasses, leaves, shoots and bamboo, feeding in clearings beside forest cover. It usually lives in herds, although mature males may be solitary. Bali’s domestic cattle descend from the banteng.
