Baird’s tapir (Tapirus bairdii) is a substantial odd-toed ungulate of forests in Mexico, Central America and northern Colombia. It uses rainforests, cloud forests and riverside woodland. Its short proboscis is mobile and grasping.
It eats fruit, leaves, grasses and twigs. The proboscis helps draw food closer and select plant parts among forest vegetation. Usually solitary, it is often active at night. It swims well and uses rivers and other water features. While in water, it can breathe through its protruding snout.
