The Australian snubfin dolphin has a rounded head, stocky body and small dorsal fin. It inhabits shallow bays, estuaries and coastal waters of northern Australia and around New Guinea. In 2005 it was described as distinct from the similar Irrawaddy dolphin.
Usually encountered in small groups, it catches small fish, squid and shrimps in productive, often turbid coastal waters. Typically wary of boats, its small gatherings and inconspicuous surfacing make distant observation difficult.
