The Australian fur seal is a subspecies of Arctocephalus pusillus associated with southern Australia, especially Bass Strait. It has dense fur and external ear flaps. It rests and breeds in colonies on rocky islands and shores.
At sea it catches fish, squid and octopuses. Feeding trips may be lengthy and extend far from colonies; nursing females return to pups left ashore. Animals rest close together on rocks, but feeding grounds cover much larger areas than breeding sites.
