The Atlantic walrus is one of two living walrus subspecies. It inhabits shallow shelf waters of the North Atlantic and neighbouring Arctic, including Svalbard. It has a massive body, thick wrinkled skin and a broad muzzle with dense, stiff whiskers. Both sexes have tusks; adult males are substantially larger, with especially heavy necks and shoulders.
It feeds near the seabed and rests on shore or ice, often in groups. The Norwegian Polar Institute’s regional account gives adult males as approximately 3–3.5 m long and around 1500 kg, and females as approximately 2.5 m and 900 kg. The board uses 325 cm, the midpoint of the male length range. This is a reconstruction reference, rather than a population mean or a measurement of the photographed animal. This profile is separate from the Pacific walrus.
