The Atlantic spotted dolphin inhabits warm Atlantic waters, both over the continental shelf and farther offshore. Young dolphins lack the characteristic spots. Spotting develops with age, so an adult may look very different from a calf swimming beside it.
It feeds on fish and squid, and in shallow water also takes bottom-associated invertebrates. A social, fast swimmer, it may search for and pursue prey with other group members. Leaps and rapid changes of direction are especially noticeable during active encounters near the surface.
