The Atlantic salmon connects rivers and the North Atlantic in its life cycle. Young develop in fresh water, with many populations later migrating to sea. Before this shift, the fish undergoes changes enabling life in salt water.
River-dwelling young eat insects and other invertebrates; at sea they grow by hunting fish and crustaceans. Adults return to fresh water to spawn, often to their natal river. Dams and deteriorating river conditions may block breeding sites, making open migration routes essential.
