Atlantic halibut — size comparison — facts and sources

The Atlantic halibut is a large flatfish of cold North Atlantic waters from North America to the Barents Sea. Adults remain over shelf and continental-slope bottoms. Their bodies are flattened and both eyes lie on one side of the head.

This asymmetry develops during growth: initially a larva resembles an ordinary bilaterally symmetrical fish, then one eye gradually migrates to the other side. Halibut hunt fish, squid and crustaceans. Larger individuals often use deeper feeding grounds than juveniles.
