The Atlantic goliath grouper lives in the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic. It has a huge head, broad mouth and substantial body. Young use mangroves, while larger fish occur around reefs, wrecks and rocky shelters.
It hunts fish, crabs and other crustaceans, usually catching prey at close range. Adults are most often solitary. They can produce low sounds by vibrating the swim bladder. It is distinct from the Indo-Pacific giant grouper, Epinephelus lanceolatus.
