Asian water monitor — size comparison — facts and sources

The Asian water monitor is a large lizard of South and South-East Asia, strongly associated with water. It occurs in mangroves, wetlands, riversides and riverine forests, also using canals in modified landscapes. An elongated body, powerful limbs and a flattened tail aid movement on land and swimming.

It feeds mainly by day, searching banks, shallows and gaps between roots for fish, crustaceans, birds, eggs and small mammals. It also takes carrion. The protruding tongue collects chemical information, while strong claws help excavate ground and investigate sheltered places.

It climbs capably and may escape into water when threatened. Females lay eggs in sheltered ground or suitable hiding places. Young live independently from the start.

Waran świetnie pływa dzięki bocznie spłaszczonemu ogonowi i łatwo przystosowuje się do namorzynów, kanałów oraz miejskich parków. Naturalne środowisko gatunku obejmuje namorzyny, rzeki, mokradła, lasy i miejskie kanały. Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza skaluje zwierzę do 175 cm długości całkowitej. Około 40 cm wysokości pokazanej sylwetki wynika z jej naturalnych proporcji i postawy, a nie z osobnej normy gatunku.
