Cantor’s giant softshell turtle — size comparison — facts and sources

Cantor’s giant softshell turtle inhabits Asian rivers and estuaries. It has a broad, flattened, skin-covered shell and an elongated snout. This build permits concealment in bottom sediment with only a small part of the head exposed.

It ambushes fish and aquatic invertebrates. Webbed feet aid swimming, and a long neck enables rapid close-range attacks. Feeding alternates with remaining concealed in sand or mud.

Females leave the water to lay eggs on land. Hatchlings independently seek food and shelter. Changes to river channels and banks may affect sites required at different life stages.
