The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The European water vole has a stocky body, dense brown fur, small ears and a hairy tail. It lives along vegetated river, pond and stream banks. It eats grasses, herbs and roots, sometimes also molluscs.
It digs bank burrows, creating resting places and plant-food stores. It may feed by day, at dawn and at dusk. Waterside scrub provides cover between feeding sites and burrow entrances. It marks territory with scent-gland secretions and swims and dives well.
Długość głowy i tułowia: od końca pyska do nasady ogona, bez kończyn i ogona. 21 cm to średnia długości głowy i tułowia samców w starszym opracowaniu ADW; ogon ma osobny pomiar.
