Argentine black-and-white tegu — size comparison — facts and sources

The Argentine black-and-white tegu (Salvator merianae) is a large terrestrial lizard of southern South America. It inhabits savannas and forest edges. A black-and-white skin pattern and substantial head distinguish adults. A forked tongue gathers chemical cues that reveal food hidden in litter or soil.

It feeds by day and can swim. During cooler seasons it spends long periods in a burrow with reduced activity. It eats fruit, invertebrates, eggs and small vertebrates.

The female builds a nest of plant material in a sheltered place.
