The Argentine horned frog (Ceratophrys ornata) inhabits South American grasslands, including pampas, and forest floors. A broad mouth and powerful build suit ambush hunting.

Projections above the eyes resemble horns. Mottled colours break up the motionless body among vegetation and ground features. It hides in leaves or loose earth and waits until prey approaches.

It eats insects, amphibians and other small vertebrates. Females attach eggs to plants in water. Tadpoles may eat one another.
