The argali is a large wild sheep of Asian mountain steppes, plateaus and rocky slopes. Adult rams have massive spiral horns that grow throughout life, varying in size and shape between populations. The winter coat becomes denser and paler; males often have pale saddles and neck ruffs.
It eats grasses, sedges and herbs. It lives in herds, with males sometimes forming separate groups and using different slopes from females outside mating periods. Open mountain pastures allow early detection of approaching predators.
