The Galapagos fur seal has grey-brown fur, paler muzzle areas and small projecting ears. Males are larger than females. Its thick coat includes guard hairs and dense underfur.
It uses the shore for rest and care of young, obtaining food on trips to sea. It catches fish and cephalopods while diving. On land it can turn its hind flippers beneath the body, assisting movement over rocky shores.
