The Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a pale, long-horned antelope of the Arabian Peninsula. It inhabits stony deserts, gravel plains and dry dunes. White coats contrast with dark head and limb markings, and both sexes have slender, straight horns.
It eats grasses, herbs and other desert plant material. It can use feeding grounds with limited water, travelling in search of vegetation appearing after rain. Resting during peak heat helps conserve bodily resources.
It lives in herds. Its history includes extinction in the wild during the nineteen-seventies, followed by a return through conservation breeding and reintroductions.
