Spiny softshell — size comparison — facts and sources

The spiny softshell (Apalone spinifera) inhabits sandy-bottomed North American rivers and lakes. Small projections along the shell’s front margin distinguish it from the smooth softshell.

Webbed toes increase propulsive surface, while a flat body allows rapid submergence and concealment in sediment. It basks and feeds by day. Disturbed animals quickly return to water and may bury in sand with the head exposed.

It eats aquatic insects, crayfish and sometimes fish. Food is found on the bottom and among vegetation, with passing prey sometimes captured. It winters beneath underwater sediment.
