The antilopine kangaroo inhabits tropical northern Australia. It uses open monsoon forests and savannas where shade adjoins grassy feeding grounds. In warmer hours it rests under trees. During the cooler wet season it may also feed by day if conditions permit.
Its food consists mainly of grasses. It seeks short, fresh vegetation, including regrowth after fires. Suitable feeding sites change with rainfall. Feeding and resting may regularly take place at the same sites within its occupied area.
It is sociable, although older males may be solitary. Females and young may stay in different groups from males. Mutual grooming helps maintain contact, and males also fight. After a short pregnancy the young climbs into the pouch for further development.
