Antarctic fur seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The Antarctic fur seal breeds on subantarctic islands and feeds in cold Southern Ocean waters. It has dense fur and visible external ears. Turning its hindflippers beneath its body allows fairly agile movement on land, where it forms large colonies.

It eats krill, fish and squid. During breeding males occupy and defend shoreline areas, while females make feeding trips between nursing pups. Historical hunting nearly eliminated the species; after hunting was curtailed, some colonies increased substantially.
