The Amur tiger is a northern population of the continental tiger, traditionally described as Panthera tigris altaica. Its natural habitat is mixed and coniferous forest in the Russian Far East and neighbouring parts of China. Dark stripes cross the orange coat in a pattern unique to each individual.
It mainly hunts wild boar, deer and other large ungulates, tracking and stalking prey with the help of vegetation and terrain. It needs extensive hunting grounds, with prey availability influencing range size.
Its lifestyle is solitary and territorial. Scent and other marks advertise its presence, while females raise cubs without sustained help from males. The winter coat becomes longer and denser, including around the neck and paws. Connected forests matter for movement and contact between populations.
