The Amur leopard is a leopard subspecies of temperate forests in the Russian Far East and neighbouring China. It has long legs, strong paws and a balancing tail. In winter, the coat becomes thick and pale, with dark rosettes remaining clearly visible.
It mainly ambushes mammals, including roe deer and other deer. Forest cover and uneven ground help it approach prey. It climbs well and may conceal a kill in a tree or sheltered place. Food availability influences the size of its range.
Adults usually live alone, detecting neighbours through scent and signs left along travel routes. Females raise cubs without sustained male assistance. Protecting extensive forests and reducing poaching are particularly important for this subspecies’ small, scattered population.
