The American pika inhabits rocky scree near mountain vegetation. Gaps between stones provide shelters with conditions different from the exposed surface. It uses them both for resting and in response to danger.
It gathers grasses and other plants, storing some in characteristic piles. These reserves help it survive periods with limited fresh food. It travels short distances between rocks and feeding grounds. Hot conditions may restrict time outside cooler retreats.
Neighbourly interactions involve calls and defence of occupied places. Young are reared in a sheltered part of the scree. Although it resembles a small rodent, it is a lagomorph, like hares and rabbits.
