The American mink is a predator associated with watersides. It rests in burrows, crevices and other shelters near feeding areas. It swims proficiently but travels much of its routes on land. Bankside vegetation provides cover while moving.
It catches fish, amphibians, small mammals and birds, adjusting its diet to local prey availability. It usually acts alone, often at dusk and night. Scent traces signal the boundaries of its occupied area. Male and female territories may differ in size.
The female rears one seasonal litter in shelter. Young gradually begin taking animal food and exploring nearby. People introduced the species to Europe, where it affects native fauna. The alternative Polish common name and older generic names refer to this same mink.
