The American marten inhabits mature forests of northern North America. Complex forest structure, with cavities, dead wood and crevices, provides many shelters and travel routes. It hunts chiefly small mammals, including squirrels and other rodents.
Birds, insects, fruit and carrion supplement its diet. Although proficient in trees, it obtains much food on the ground.
It is usually solitary and marks its surroundings with scent. It forages intensively at dusk and dawn.
