The American crocodile is a semi-aquatic predator of coasts in the Americas and Caribbean. It inhabits estuaries, lagoons, mangroves and other fresh or brackish waters. Its elongated snout distinguishes it from the broad-snouted American alligator, with which it overlaps in part of its range.
It hunts mainly beside water, often at night, ambushing fish, crustaceans, birds and other vertebrates. A powerful tail drives swimming, and eyes and nostrils sit high on the head. By day it may bask ashore or rest in sheltered water.
Females lay eggs on land, making suitable nesting sites important parts of the habitat. Hatchlings use waterside hiding places and take smaller foods than adults. Coastal changes can affect both feeding and breeding sites.
