The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is a large amphibian native to eastern North America. It occupies permanent ponds, lakes and slow waterways. A large eardrum is visible behind the eye, especially in males.
Powerful hindlimbs enable rapid jumps and dives, while a broad mouth accommodates varied prey. It waits close to water and can also eat smaller frogs. Males make deep, loud calls and defend breeding sites.
It eats invertebrates and various small vertebrates. Eggs form extensive masses in water. Tadpoles chiefly take plant food and small organic material, whereas adults hunt animals.
