The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The American black bear inhabits North American forests, wetlands, mountains and coasts. It has relatively tall ears and a straight muzzle profile. Coats may be black, brown, cinnamon or, locally, very pale. Colour alone is therefore unreliable for distinguishing it from a brown bear; head shape and the absence of a pronounced shoulder hump also matter.
It is omnivorous, eating fruit, nuts, other plants, insects, fish and carrion in seasonally changing proportions. Usually solitary, it has short, curved claws that support capable tree climbing even in adulthood. It swims well and may cross water between feeding areas.
National Park Service podaje dla dorosłych około 90 cm w barku, a dla samców 95–143 kg w populacji Yellowstone. Gatunek wykazuje jednak ogromną zmienność geograficzną i dobrze odżywione samce mogą przekraczać 300 kg. Na planszy używamy 90 cm w naturalnej pozycji na czterech łapach — nigdy wysokości niedźwiedzia stojącego pionowo.
