The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The plains form of the American bison inhabits North American grasslands. It has a huge head, heavy forequarters and shorter hair over the hindquarters. Both sexes have horns. A dense winter coat protects against cold, while developed neck and shoulder muscles help sweep snow aside with the head.
It mainly eats grasses and sedges, moving between grazing areas and reaching food beneath winter snow. Wallowing removes loose hair and helps reduce insect irritation. The resulting shallow hollows become a lasting feature of the landscape.
Females and young form herds, with adult bulls often joining during the breeding season. Reddish-brown calves soon stand and follow their mothers. The group provides protection, although wolves and bears may take young or weakened animals.
