American beaver — size comparison — facts and sources

The American beaver combines life in water with feeding along shores. It builds lodges or uses burrows whose entrances usually lead from underwater. Dams help maintain suitable water levels, but dam building depends on local conditions.

It eats bark, soft tissues beneath bark, shoots and aquatic plants. Wood is building material rather than its only food. Continuously growing incisors help process plants. The family gathers food and maintains shelter within a shared territory.

Young may remain with their parents for successive seasons, helping with new litters and construction work. A tail slap on the water signals alarm. Altering watercourses creates habitats for other organisms.
