The American alligator is a semiaquatic reptile of the south-eastern United States. It inhabits marshes, lakes and slow-flowing rivers. A broad, rounded snout and usually dark skin distinguish it from the American crocodile. The large tail makes up a substantial part of its body and propels it through water.
Diet changes with age and includes fish, turtles, birds, mammals and other animals near water. It hunts by ambush and rests in water or basks between meals. Hollows it creates in wetlands can retain water for other species.
The female builds a vegetation mound, lays her eggs inside and guards the nest. She helps hatchlings reach water and continues caring for them after hatching. Small alligators have many predators and use shoreline vegetation for shelter.
