The Hottentot golden mole lives underground in grassland and forest habitats. It has short, dark brown fur and powerful foreclaws. It lacks prominent external ears and a tail, and skin covers its eyes.

Tunnel systems may include side passages and chambers. It seeks earthworms, insect larvae and other invertebrates in soft, damp soil. Despite its common name’s association with moles, it belongs to a separate African mammal group more closely related to animals including tenrecs.
