The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Amazon river dolphin, or boto, inhabits South American rivers, lakes and seasonally flooded forests. An elongated snout, broad pectoral fins and very mobile neck help it manoeuvre among submerged trunks. Colour varies: young are usually greyer, while adults may become pinkish. Some paler and pink areas in males are associated with scars.
It usually feeds alone or in small groups, chiefly on fish but also crustaceans and occasionally small turtles. Rear teeth can crush harder prey. High river levels open new feeding grounds in flooded forest; as water falls, animals return to main channels and lakes.
