The alpine newt has an orange, usually unspotted belly. Breeding males are particularly colourful, with a potentially bluish back, dark-spotted sides and low dorsal fold. Females are larger and less contrasting.
It breeds in water, laying individual eggs folded into plant leaves. Outside water bodies it uses damp terrestrial shelters. Appearance changes between aquatic and terrestrial phases.
It hunts small invertebrates in ponds, small pools and damp land shelters.
