Marmota marmota
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Alpine marmot inhabits mountain areas above the treeline. It digs extensive burrows providing shelter from predators and winter cold. Open grasslands supply food, and nearby safe entrances allow rapid retreat when danger interrupts feeding.
It eats mainly herbs, leaves and flowers. During warm months it accumulates fat for prolonged hibernation. The family winters in a shared chamber. Contact with adults and older siblings helps young reduce heat loss.
Family groups maintain territories and warn one another with loud whistles. Young are born underground, where the mother cares for them until their first outings. Mutual grooming and nose-to-nose greetings form part of social contact. Breeding also depends on the female's condition after winter.
