Brown howler — size comparison — facts and sources
The brown howler is a monkey of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil and Argentina. It has a massive body, a dark face and a long, prehensile tail. Fur colour varies with sex and population. It moves on all four limbs, while the grasping tail tip helps it maintain its position in tree crowns.
It eats leaves, fruit and flowers, selecting young leaves and seasonal fruit among other foods. It spends much of the day resting. Its loud voice, associated with an enlarged hyoid apparatus, helps groups announce their presence in the forest. It occurs in lowland, montane and seasonally dry forests.
